Burbano – "Palmetto" Cast Interview 8/25/07
Luis
plays "Hunter Frost" on Palmetto
1) What was the attraction of doing this series?
My personal life in my high school years most definitely influenced my attraction
to working on the show. High school was the best four years of my life because
it was a rollercoaster on a wild ride, where I wasn’t able see the track ahead.
One minute I could be on top of the world with my friends, and the next I could
have easily been sitting by myself at lunch. The fact that this series is exposing
the reality of what makes high school a turning point to all of us drives me
to give it my all! Not everyone has the chance to go back in time and relive
those four significant years, so I find it a privilege and a blessing to be
able to do so!
2) What makes PALMETTO different from any other teen drama you’ve seen?
Palmetto clearly distinguishes itself from any other teenage drama by focusing
and portraying real life situations of high school students in America. You
don’t have to come from populated cities such as New York City of Beverly Hills
to have to deal with the pressures of social life and personal life. I believe
our audience will be able to relate to everyone in the show because we are surrounded
by these kinds of people on a daily basis, especially throughout our young academic
life.
3) What are the challenges of playing a character coming from a small
town?
Having had lived personally in two major cities, I was always thankful that
my family and I lived in populated areas where no one was interested in your
personal life; I mean they had their own problems to attend to. Portraying a
character that lives to be in the public eye and loves to dig into the dirt
of his friend’s lives was only challenge I had encountered, seeing as how I
don’t like to meddle in someone’s business unless I am involved nor am I offended
if I am not the center of attention.
4) Without giving too much away, can you talk about your character?
Hunter is without a doubt the comic relief and social heir of Palmetto High.
With a very strong and out going personality, he finds it very hard for anything
to stop him from having a good time. His major flaw would have to be his egotistic
and selfish personality that always leaves him with severe consequences where
he has no one to blame but himself. However, underneath his negative qualities,
he has a great, big heart that shines through when times are rough.
5) How do you prepare for your scenes? What do you do to get “into
character?”
I find that I am a kinesthetic learner, where I have to walk around in circles
or act out my movements just to learn my lines. I was taught by my acting coach
to use two different color highlighters (one for your dialogue, and another
for your movements, actions, and emotion) after I become familiar with the scene.
It helps me out a lot when I write on the margins whatever I am feeling in that
moment and restating why I am feeling that way, so when the time comes to begin
filming, I mentally prepare myself by looking over those notes and pick up where
I left off, as if it just happened.
6) Without giving too much away, what has been your favorite scene
to shoot?
My favorite scenes to film are any that remind me of a typical day of my high
school life. Talking with my close friends while the teacher is instructing,
planning school events where everyone has a great time, but more importantly,
any scene where I don’t forget all of my lines.
7) Is there any advice, wisdom, or comments your character would like
to give the fans?
Watch out for karma! It is imperative to think about the consequences of your
actions before they occur because it will not only affect you, but everyone
around you. As hard as it is for Hunter to admit, selfishness is a big downfall
and can leave you very unhappy with yourself. So always look for ways to be
a difference, and make someone’s day rather than break it.
